THE QUESTION ALMOST EVERYONE ASKS
Am I doing this right?
Should my knee be here?
Should my hips be square?
Should I go deeper?
And what exactly am I supposed to be feeling?
For decades, yoga has given us endless cues about what a pose should look like.
But a pose can look perfect on the outside while creating completely different amounts of stretch, tension, stability, and joint load on the inside.
Learning to create the right amount of stretch and stability, while finding that feeling of ‘grounded spaciousness,’ is a skill.
And like any skill, it has to be learned.
THE CORE IDEA
Yoga is a Feeling, Not Just a Shape
In a typical vinyasa class, one teacher may be guiding 20, 30, or even 40 students. They simply can’t see everything happening in every body.
And even if they could, they cannot feel what you feel.
They don’t know everything about your anatomy, your history, your strength, your mobility, or what you’re experiencing inside a pose today.
Only you know what it feels like to live inside your body.
That’s why “listen to your body” is good advice.
But first, you need to know what to listen for.
A pose isn’t something you simply fall into.
You actively create the forces that put the stretch and stability where you want them.
That’s a skill you need to learn. Yoga Optimized will teach you how.
I LEARNED THIS THE HARD WAY
I thought yoga was inherently beneficial. I didn’t think it could hurt me.
In 2000, I received a hands-on adjustment in a pose I had struggled with for years.
In Marichyasana D, my teacher helped me bind my hands. My left knee was six inches from the floor, so he stepped on it until it touched the floor.
From the outside, the pose looked right. I had checked every box.
I finally made the shape. But I didn’t understand what I was supposed to feel.
Seconds later, I heard a snap in my knee.
I had gotten the pose “right.”
So how had it gone so wrong?
THE QUESTION THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
I had to change the way I practiced.
I began questioning and rethinking much of what I had been taught.
After my injury, I became obsessed with understanding how to practice more intelligently.
I spent decades seeking out great teachers, researching and studying anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, and movement, then testing what I learned in my own body and with students around the world.
Along the way, I began identifying literacy gaps in the way modern yoga is commonly taught and developing new principles to fill them.
One of those discoveries became DUO: Dynamic Unifying Opposition.
Another became Sensation-Guided Attunement.
Yoga Optimized grew from that work: a new approach grounded in movement science and guided by what you can actually feel.
THEN SOMETHING UNEXPECTED HAPPENED
I set out to heal my knee.
I discovered something much bigger.
The principles I was developing didn’t just improve my yoga. They changed how I moved in sports, strength training, and daily life.
I became more flexible and stronger. More mobile and more stable.
That led me to a bigger question: What if yoga can help us build a body that moves well now and keeps moving for life?
I call this your Movement Span.
You know what a lifespan is, and you’ve probably heard of healthspan. Your Movement Span is the number of years you can move with optimally functioning joints, power, and grace.
Yoga Optimized is designed to help you increase your Movement Span, on and off the mat, so you can keep doing the things you love for as long as possible.

SEE THE DIFFERENCE
Is 90° really the “right” Chaturanga?
There’s nothing inherently wrong with 90° if you’re strong enough to manage the load. The problem is treating it as the universal answer.
Your body acts like a lever. Change the position and you change the forces your muscles and joints have to handle.
Instead of chasing a perfect 90-degree angle, learn how to put science in your corner and choose the version that makes sense for your body today.
Don’t just memorize the cue. Understand the why.
