🌟 IS YOGA PHYSICAL OR SPIRITUAL? 🌟

I get this question all the time. I’d love to hear your thoughts below!

My answer is that it’s both.

Initially, yoga focused on meditation—sitting, breathing, and stilling the mind to connect with universal consciousness. Later, yoga asanas (poses) were developed to help us sit comfortably for long periods.

Here’s the catch: yoga asana demands biomechanical wisdom. Without it, the risk of injury increases, and the practice’s benefits decrease.

From Yoga Optimized (page 15):
“Even though yoga is ultimately a spiritual pursuit meant to unlock our highest self, we are making very sophisticated shapes in gravity where the laws of physics apply.

Being kind and spiritual isn’t enough—we must educate ourselves about the workings of the body.”

In other words, ✨ spiritual laws matter, but so do Newton’s laws! ✨

When you learn how your joints function and how to apply tension and compression properly using DUO, you help your body function optimally on and off the mat.

Learning the physics of yoga asana is not just being nerdy; it is a radical act of kindness, the cornerstone of yoga (and a happy life). ✨

The Yoga Optimized course and book were born from a moment that changed everything.

In 2000, a knee injury forced me to question not just how I practiced yoga—but why. What felt like a setback became the beginning of a deeper inquiry into how yoga actually works in the body, and why so many well-intentioned practitioners get injured despite doing everything they’ve been taught is “right.”

As I healed, it became clear that the issue wasn’t yoga itself, but a literacy gap in how it’s practiced. Too often, poses are treated as shapes to achieve rather than experiences to feel. Without an understanding of biomechanics, load distribution, and sensation, practitioners trade long-term joint health for short-term flexibility or appearance.

Over decades of study and teaching, this inquiry led to DUO (Dynamic Unifying Opposition) and Sensation-Guided Attunement—principles that create precise, supportive stretches while intelligently distributing forces through the joints. This approach refines depth and challenge, making practice safer and more effective.

Common causes of yoga injuries include:
-Ego-driven endpoints that override bodily feedback
-Lack of education in biomechanics and joint loading
-Misinterpreting sensation, assuming discomfort always equals benefit
-Dulled pain signals are influenced by the body’s opioid system

Yoga Optimized exists to evolve the tradition with care and respect—helping people move with more intelligence, less fear, and greater longevity.

chapter 2

The commitment to devote ten years to writing Yoga, Optimized began with a knee injury I experienced in yoga. That pain became an invitation—not just to be kinder to myself but to work for the happiness of others. 🕊️

I love yoga and don’t want anyone else to go through what I did. That’s why I wrote Yoga, Optimized: to make injuries a thing of the past. 🙏✨
On page 22, I share this idea:
“The root of compassion is the Latin word compati, which means ‘to suffer with.’” 💞

Pain, much like love, has a way of unlocking us. Just as a molecule docks to a receptor on a cell, making it more open to signals, pain can dock to our hearts and make us more open to kindness. 💔➡️❤️

I’ve watched people close to me suffer through cancer, trauma, and addiction, and I’ve seen how, when they come out the other side, they are filled with an overwhelming desire to help others navigate these waters. Their pain transforms into compassion, becoming a guide for those who are still struggling.

✨” If I didn’t know the pain in me, I wouldn’t know the pain in you, and I wouldn’t care.” ✨

Too often, we numb our pain. But what if, instead, we saw it as a gift? An invitation to grow? 🌱

That’s the spirit of Yoga, Optimized. On the mat, we practice compassion and wisdom toward ourselves so we can carry that kindness into the world—into our relationships, our communities, and the way we care for the planet. 🌍🧘‍♀️🧘

Numbness is not the way. Let’s open up to the gift of pain and turn it into the experience of love. 💡❤️

Have you ever been told to “breathe your tension out” in yoga? It’s a confusing message. While we want to release mental stress, mechanical tension—as in a stretch—is actually the goal of most yoga poses.

✨Take Pyramid Pose (Parsvottanasana). The hamstrings should feel a stretch, but many people unconsciously lessen that tension to “reach” their chin to their shin. Instead of using hip flexion—moving the front of the pelvis toward the thighs—to stretch the hamstring, they create spinal flexion, rounding the spine and letting the pelvis tilt backward, missing the stretch entirely.

Here’s where the principle of DUO (dynamic unifying opposition) comes in:

One part of the body moves one way while another pulls in the opposite direction. This isolates the stretch in the targeted muscles.

⚡️Try a supine leg stretch with both a bent and straight leg:

1️⃣ Lie down and bend your right knee. Notice how this reduces hamstring tension ⬇️ but increases hip flexion ⬆️.

2️⃣ Now straighten your right leg and hold your foot. Feel the hamstring tension increase ⬆️, but your hip flexion (range of motion) decreases ⬇️.

Why is this important??? More tension and less range of motion is where the stretch lives. Over time, adding tension to the muscle is what makes it more flexible.

🌟Instead of “breathing tension out,” focus on isolating it with precise opposing movements using DUO. That’s how we stretch, heal, and function at our best.

The tagline for Yoga Optimized is “Yoga is a feeling, not just a shape.”

In many classes, students are told:

“Go back, look back, fall back—see the wall behind you!”

However, this encourages compression in the fragile facet joints of the spine.

I’ve taught over 300,000 people yoga, and in Camel Pose, most point to their lower back and say, “I feel a great stretch here.” ✨But that’s not a stretch (tension in the front body muscles)—it’s bone-on-bone compression in the back! ✨

Instead of chasing an endpoint, use DUO—press forward and up to create a stretch in the abs, hip flexors, neck, and shoulders. This is why I don’t use the term “back bend” anymore. It lures people into excessive compression.

As you will read on page 39 of Yoga Optimized, I use “Front Body Stretches” for this category of poses, not “Backbends.” ✨

Imagine if yoga teachers said:

🧘‍♂️ “Feel the stretch in your abdominals and minimize pinching in your back.”

Instead of:

❌ “Let’s do Camel to create a backbend.”
Yoga Optimized is all about this: moving with wisdom and longevity in mind.

💬 Have you ever been told to ‘go back, look back, fall back’ in Camel? What did it feel like for you? It’s time to use Sensation-Guided Attunment, which gives us the cerebral and kinesthetic awareness to intelligently customize our yoga practice.

Why do you practice yoga?

For me, the number one reason I practice is simple: Yoga’s greatest gift is helping us release ✨STUCK EMOTIONS.✨

As Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen says, “Our minds are like the wind, and our bodies the dunes. Look at the dunes to see how the wind is blowing.”

Emotions like fear, grief, and stress send signals to the body, causing contraction. This tightness can leave us guarded, feeling like sea anemones after they have been touched. We end up “emotionally constipated,” as my teacher @susanaposhyan puts it.

Many people rely on drugs, alcohol, or other distractions to numb out these unpleasant feelings.

But intelligent Yoga goes far beyond fitness or flexibility. It’s about emotional release—letting go of the mental triggers that keep our muscles and organs locked down.

Flexibility is often just a byproduct of learning to release tightness and reconnect with peace.

Yoga is a process of subtraction—peeling away stress to reveal the light within.

In the spirit of kindness, I’d love to share more about this topic ✨Comment #YOGAOPTIMIZED to receive Chapter 10 of Yoga Optimized. ✨

Welcome to Yoga Optimized.

This course is designed to support intelligent movement, long-term health, and a deeper relationship with the body.

Before explaining how the course works, Eoin Finn begins with why.

In his teachings, the method is never separated from the meaning. Every technique, pose, and principle is rooted in a clear intention.

Throughout Yoga Optimized and this course, Eoin focuses on the why because intention shapes outcomes. When purpose is clear, practice becomes precise, sustainable, and deeply effective.

So let’s begin by clarifying the overarching intention of this course. Not just what you’ll learn, but why it matters—and why this work has the potential to meaningfully improve your health, your resilience, and the quality of your life.

This course represents decades of study across biomechanics, physiology, neuroscience, and lived experience. It was shaped by injury, recovery, curiosity, and refinement, and distilled into a system that is practical, accessible, and transformative.

At its core, the course is guided by a simple mission: to push the boundaries of human health and love. The belief is simple—how we move shapes how we feel, how we age, and how we show up for one another.

This video introduces Core Line Integration poses for strength, stability, and long-term joint health.

Most yoga injuries don’t come from doing too much — they come from poor load distribution.

This video is a free sample lesson from the Yoga Optimized online course by Eoin Finn (Blissology). https://blissology.com/yogaoptimized

In this session, you’ll learn the foundations of Core Line Integration poses — a family of yoga postures designed to create strength along length, joint stability, and spinal resilience rather than compression or strain.

These principles come directly from Yoga Optimized (pages 172–182) and are translated into embodied, feelable knowledge you can apply immediately.

As we say in Blissology, “Yoga is a feeling, not just a shape.”

What Are Core Line Integration Poses?

Core Line Integration poses work along the midline of the body, dispersing load intelligently across multiple joints instead of concentrating stress in one place.

Rather than chasing big abdominal effort or extreme stretching, these poses cultivate:
• Strength with spaciousness
• Spinal integrity and joint health
• Calm, supportive breathing
• Long-term movement longevity

When you understand one pose in this family, you understand them all.

Poses Featured in This Family
• Plank
• Side Plank
• Low Plank / Chaturanga
• Mountain Pose (Tadasana)
• Headstand (Sirsasana)
• Forearm Stand
• Handstand

You’ll also learn how breath, subsidiary DUO lines, and force vectors integrate to create a feeling of effortless strength and ease.

Continue the Journey 🌊
If this approach resonates with you, the full Yoga Optimized course takes these principles far deeper — covering all five families of yoga poses, biomechanics, breath mechanics, and movement patterns for long-term vitality.

Imagine going to a gym where you couldn’t adjust the weight—everyone had to bench press 200 pounds.

That’s what we do in Chaturanga when we cue 90° elbows and biceps parallel to the floor—regardless of your strength level.

Now ask yourself: would you recommend that everyone, no matter their strength, keep their forearms perpendicular to the floor in Chaturanga? Almost everybody does. Just Google “how to do Chaturanga,” and you’ll see—98% of the results show this exact same form.

It’s incredible—and troubling—that this blind pursuit of aesthetic alignment is actually overloading people’s joints. Instead of preventing injuries, it’s causing them—especially in the wrists and shoulders.

That’s why I spent 10 years writing Yoga Optimized—to challenge these inherited cues and bring biomechanics into the conversation.

Yes, I even asked ChatGPT for Chaturanga instructions. It gave me the same outdated advice—because AI is just recycling what’s already online.

Page 188 breaks down how to scale Chaturanga based on your actual strength level. DM me and I’ll send you the PDF.

Yoga Optimized is here to end the one-size-fits-all approach to alignment. Because what looks good isn’t always what works best.

This short video has the potential to permanently upgrade how you stretch—especially in poses most people call “forward folds.”

We start with clear, practical anatomy and translate it into felt experience, so your stretches actually land where you intend them to. No more empty shapes or guessing. This is about creating back body stretches that are precise, satisfying, and sustainable.

You’ll learn key pelvic landmarks—like the sit bones, ASIS, pubic symphysis, and hip joints—and how understanding them gives you far more control over pelvic tilt. That control is what determines whether you’re truly stretching the hamstrings… or just rounding your spine.

We also explore the hamstrings and calf muscles, their attachment points, and how hip flexion and extension change the stretch. These insights turn familiar poses into intelligent, supportive stretches that feel good in your body—rather than forced.

This video offers a glimpse into the Yoga Optimized approach, where anatomy, sensation, and movement intelligence come together to help you move better for life.

What does toes-to-bar have to do with deepening your hamstring stretches? 🤔

The answer: ✨ EVERYTHING. ✨

This reel demonstrates what’s on page 214 of Yoga Optimized. Flip toes-to-bar upside down; you’ll see the same shape as a standing forward fold (Uttanasana).

To bring your toes to the bar 🦶🏽➕🤸🏽, you engage your abs, hip flexors, and long quadriceps. The same muscles help bring your pelvis toward your thighs in Uttanasana. This engagement lifts the sit bones 🍑, creating length from your pelvis to the back of your knees for a precise, enjoyable hamstring stretch.

By contrast, if you just drop your head forward like a rag doll 🤷🏽, you’ll likely round your spine, shifting most of the stretch into your lower back muscles instead of your hamstrings.

💡 Here’s the key to a precise hamstring stretch 🎯

✨We can only send signals for muscles to contract 🧠 💪🏼- not to stretch themselves. ✨They require an outside force.

To stretch effectively, some muscles must engage to create the force that stretches others. In hamstring stretches, the “toes-to-bar” muscles generate that force. Simply dropping the head in gravity will not give you the precision or control.

chapter 3

In this video, we explore the Back Body Stretch family, often called “forward folds”—but this name misses the point.

Without education on pelvic movement, folding deeper by prioritizing chin-to-shin often means stretching the hamstrings less, not more. Most people equate progress in these poses with getting their face closer to the legs or floor, but in practice, going “deeper” often comes from spinal flexion rather than hip flexion.

When the spine flexes, the pelvis reduces its anterior tilt rather than moving into a true posterior tilt, shifting the stretch away from the hamstrings and into the spine.

Using the Blissology principle of DUO (Dynamic Unifying Opposition), this video shows how an effective Back Body Stretch is created through two intersecting DUO lines:

DUO Line 1: from the feet to the posterior border of the sitting bones
DUO Line 2: from the crown of the head to the inferior border of the sitting bones

When both DUO lines are engaged, the pelvis organizes more skillfully, the hamstrings are stretched more precisely, the spine feels long rather than collapsed, and the breath remains deep and three-dimensional. When one or both lines are missing, the pose may look deeper but delivers less benefit and more strain.

You’ll also see that there is one overall template for the Back Body Stretch family of poses—we simply keep flipping ourselves in gravity. Whether seated, standing, on the hands, or on the back, the same principles apply.

This video explains the material found on page 252 of Yoga Optimized and reframes the Back Body Stretch as a feeling of stretch and space, not just an external shape. It teaches you how to create poses that are more intelligent, more effective, and far kinder to your body.

The Truth About Twists
Knowledge is power.
Knowledge is health.

And in the body, a lack of knowledge can be dangerous. Most people think their spine is stuck when they can’t twist deeply. But the spine is designed to be stable, not cranked into rotation.

The real drivers of trunk rotation are the obliques. When these muscles are tight or poorly organized, twists feel restricted. When they are lengthened and engaged intelligently, the spine can rotate with stability and freedom.

That’s why in Blissology, we rethink twists as Lateral Side Body Stretches, where the hips and side body open while the spine stays protected. This simple shift distributes forces more intelligently through the body, protects the spine from concentrated loads, and finally places the stretch where it actually belongs.

And the best part?

This lesson is only 12 minutes, but it will likely forever change the way you practice yoga.
